Gobiinae est une sous-famille de la famille des Gobiidae. Les Gobiinae ("vrais gobies") vivent dans tous les océans et quelques lacs et rivières, la plupart vivant en eaux chaudes. Cette sous-famille regroupe 150 genres répartis en 2000 espèces. La majeur partie de ces espèces mesure moins de 10 Cm, bien que Glossogobius giuris puisse atteindre une taille de 50 Cm. Trimmatom nanus est quand à lui un des plus petits vertébrés avec ses 1 Cm à taille adulte. Il vivent le plus souvent en eau de mer, quelques espèces tolérant l'eau saumâtre. Seules des espèces des genres Padogobius & Pomatoschistus fréquentent les eaux douces (Padogobius nigricans étant endémique des rivières italiennes, Padogobius bonelli fréquentant quand à lui les cours d'eau de Croatie, Italie, Slovénie et Suisse).
